Thanks to TV advertisements, Bugle Boy became known for a campaign featuring a popular phrase ‘Excuse me, are those Bugle Boy jeans that you’re wearing?’, creating a huge interest through the 80s for the denim collection. Besides denim, designer William Mow had also created a line of parachute trousers and cargos. Though having a successful run, Bugle Boy’s ship sank in 2001 when the designer had filed for bankruptcy, therefore ceasing all manufacturing and distribution of his designs. Interestingly, the fashion world has seen a comeback both in parachute and cargo trousers, with many individuals today rocking these styles. Therefore, whilst Bugle Boy failed to continue its journey through the decades, William Mow’s designs can still be seen around high-end and vintage stores today.

Reviving Fashion With Jacques Fath

Jacques Fath, also known as the greatest French designer of all time, helped to bring life back to the Paris fashion industry after the Second World War. Fath’s fashion signature? Plunging necklines, hourglass silhouettes and pleats complimented by bold patterns. Though it’s often credited to the 90s, it was actually the 70s and 80s that saw a rise in the love for denim, with celebrities like Debbie Harry and The Charlie Angels often rocking the double denim look. As a result of this, we have a lot more reach and can receive outfits the next day (if not sooner), so we find trends moving a lot faster than they did previously. This includes film, entertainment, music, art, and fashion. The 60s were particularly interesting for fashion, as there were many different styles of clothing introduced. The 1960s also brought flared trousers and mini skirts, something which was very against the grain of the decades before. As young people would typically mimic the clothing that their parents would wear. And of course, with the bias previously mentioned, we need to give a special reference to mod fashion, which was one of the movements that influenced the 60s fashion and has been influencing fashion since its birth. The short kind of jackets like the bomber or the Harrington, the mix between the old days' style and the bold style clothing converged in this unique movement that still has its admirers these days, like us. 

1970s Disco Fever

The 1970s brought a disco revolution that influenced fashion in a significant way. Disco culture was all about glitz, glamour, and excess. Shimmering fabrics, bold prints, and platform shoes were the go-to choices for partygoers. The iconic disco looks for men included wide-collar shirts, bell-bottom pants, and flashy accessories. This era embraced a sense of freedom and self-expression, with disco clubs becoming the epicentre of fashion and dance. The disco fashion of the 70s continues to inspire retro-themed parties and nostalgic fashion enthusiasts.

1980s Neon

Now, this is a highly debated topic. Was 1980s neon iconic or tacky? Whilst fashion gurus never quite came up with an answer to this question, 1980s neon was one of a kind. Another style of note was high-waisted jeans, something that was denounced in the early 2000s and brought back around 2014. Whilst the 1980s brought big hair and big fashion ideas, we can't help but think that it wasn't necessarily our favourite.

1990s Grunge

Millennials of today are a far cry from what they wore in their youth. The arrival of the 1990s grunge brought themes of oversized clothing, gothic eyeliner, and ripped jeans. However, it also brought forward an idea that started in the 1980s, which was casual wear. This resulted in sportswear becoming fashion and brands like Nike, Kappa, and Ellesse. 90s fashion had a heavy influence on not only clothes but also hair, beauty, and tattoos. It was one of the first decades where tattoos were featured in mainstream fashion, and the famous lower back tattoo will haunt people's memories forever, and some bodies too.

2000s Streetwear and Pop Culture

The 2000s marked a shift towards streetwear and the influence of pop culture on fashion. This era saw the rise of iconic brands like Supreme, BAPE, and Off-White, which popularized a casual and edgy aesthetic. The origin of the paisley pattern

The paisley pattern dates back centuries, starting in the 11th century where it was first made in India near Kashmir. The pattern itself features a cypress tree with a floral spray that traditionally represents life and fertility, acting as a good luck token to anyone who wears it.

It became even more popular in the 16th century when kashmir shawls were made which had the print on fabric that was made with woven goats hair. In the 19th century, the pattern finally gained its name ‘paisley’ as these were mostly made in the town ‘Paisley’ located in Scotland, where the majority of Kashmir-inspired shawls were produced at the time. Many believe that the pattern originated in Scotland because of this, but in fact, it originated long before this in India.

When did it become popular?

In more recent years, the paisley pattern gained popularity during the 60’s and 70’s when loud, bright and bold colours were worn by anyone and everyone. This came following the influence of psychedelic style and a new genre of music that promoted love and peace.

This print was everywhere during this revolutionary time, on flared trousers, suits and womens dresses, as people wanted to make a statement about their identity and their beliefs.

After this, paisley’s popularity began to decline as the use of colours and patterns calmed down, but it did make a comeback during the 1990s when it was adapted by rock ‘n’ roll culture, and several celebrities made a point of wearing it to keep the pattern alive and in fashion.

Because of this, the pattern was frequently used as accents to an outfit, on bandanas, mens ties and handkerchiefs, and is even still used in high end designers pieces such as GUCCI who still produce their own versions of a paisley shirt today.

Originating in Coventry in the 1970s, two-tone was a new music genre born from the combination of Jamaican reggae with a punk attitude. As a result of this music, a style to match was born, and those who identified with the movement found themselves dressing in two-tone clothing such as Harrington jackets, Dr Martens boots and pencil skirts to express themselves. 

What is Two-Tone Clothing?

Worn by rude boys and rude girls who were into two-tone music, which was heavily influenced by ska and Jamaican reggae, the two-tone style was symbolic of the ska and mod revival in the late 70s and is still influential in today’s fashion. Bands such as The Specials, The Selecter and The Beat aimed to diffuse racial tension during tough times in Britain and instead celebrated the fusion of two cultures in which two-tone was born. 

Two-tone clothing was first popular in the 1960s when mod and skinhead cultures crossed over, and this developed into the two-tone movement of the late 70s, which would continue to be prevalent into the 1980s, too.

Now, two-tone pieces like our vintage burgundy shirt are iconic of the late 1900s are still popular with many pieces found in most wardrobes today, and two-tone itself saw many subcultures produced as a result, including third-wave ska and ska punk. 

What Pieces Are Typical Of Two Tone Style?

There is a clear distinction between men's and women’s two-tone fashion, with each gender wearing specific pieces to show their commitment to the movement and appear recognisable in the streets to everyone who saw. 

Men would typically sport a shaved head or buzz cut, a fitted polo shirt, perhaps with a pair of braces over the top, clipped onto a straight leg or drainpipe trousers which would be cropped to show off white socks or the tops of their Dr Martens shiny leather boots.
